Column: Water safety vital to keiki education | Honolulu Star-Advertiser

There has been a lot of public debate this year about a tragic and, in my opinion, unacceptable statistic: Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death among children in Hawaii. Tragic because, although we live in a state celebrated for its spectacular coastlines, we have the second-highest rate of resident drownings in the nation. Unacceptable because this wasn’t always the case in our islands, and I firmly believe it doesn’t have to be this way.
