Columbus Zoo Announces Vision for the John F. Wolfe Aquarium
The free-standing aquarium will span more than 100,000 square feet and house 10,000 aquatic animals across 27 exhibits.
On Friday, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced plans for the $175 million John F. Wolfe Aquarium, funded by a $50 million gift from the Wolfe Foundation.
The Wolfe family, which helped establish the zoo in 1926, provided the largest philanthropic gift in the organization's history, described by President and CEO Tom Schmid as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity."
Spanning more than 100,000 square feet, the standalone site will house more than 10,000 aquatic animals across 27 immersive exhibits, including the Amazon River Basin and the Scioto River.
Set to open in 2029, the Wolfe Aquarium will operate independently from the main zoo, requiring visitors to purchase separate tickets for entry.
Zoo officials plan to prioritize sustainability in construction while relocating current aquarium species, aiming to "strengthen our conservation impact" and position the project as a regional conservation landmark.
