Transgender Youth in Sports Will Be on Colorado's Statewide Ballot in November After Certification
Two citizen initiatives would ban transgender athletes from female teams and prohibit gender-affirming surgeries for minors, backed by Protect Kids Colorado with 91% signature validity.
- Two initiatives qualified this week for Colorado's Nov. 3 ballot, and Colorado voters will decide whether to ban sex-change surgeries for minors and restrict transgender athletes in girls' sports.
- Backed by Protect Kids Colorado, the advocacy group submitted nearly 165,000 signatures with a 91% validity rate, surpassing the 124,238 valid signatures requirement for the ballot.
- Initiative #110 would ban sex-change surgeries for minors and bar federal funds, Medicaid or insurance from paying for such interventions, as supporters note surgeries for children have been extremely rare.
- Opponents including gay rights groups and Rocky Mountain Equality say the measures will harm transgender youths and have formed opposition groups like Families Not Politics, while supporters say each measure would need a simple majority to become law in 2027.
- Hospitals have already paused puberty blockers and hormone treatments amid federal pressure, Children’s Hospital Colorado faces Colorado Supreme Court litigation, and the measures join a total of five on the Nov. 3 ballot.
