College football defensive coordinator dies ‘unexpectedly’ at 34

The 34-year-old defensive coordinator had just been promoted in January and was preparing for his first season in the role, the school said.

  • Monmouth University announced Wednesday that defensive coordinator Louis DiRienzo Jr. died unexpectedly on Saturday at age 34, just months into his first season leading the Hawks' defense.
  • Before joining Monmouth in 2025, DiRienzo coached at Rutgers, Wagner, and Springfield College, where he served as defensive coordinator for four years. The former Southern Connecticut State University linebacker was promoted to his current role in January.
  • "He loved his family, he loved his players, he loved coaching football," Monmouth head coach Jeff Gallo said. Director of Athletics Jennifer Sansevero called him an "outstanding coach, mentor and colleague" who made immediate impact.
  • DiRienzo is survived by his wife, Allie, and their twin daughters, Audrina and Giavanna, who are soon to turn 3. Monmouth stated it will support the grieving family through this difficult time.
  • A Yonkers native who starred at New Rochelle High School, DiRienzo's influence will endure with the program. Head coach Gallo said, "Lou's presence will remain with our team; energy never dies.
