Cocoa prices have come down, but that doesn't mean Easter chocolate will be cheaper
Chocolate makers maintain prices to recover costs after prior cocoa price spikes and recipe changes, despite cocoa futures falling from over $12,000 to around $3,000 per tonne.
- Despite cocoa futures falling closer to US$3,000 per tonne, chocolate manufacturers are maintaining current retail prices for Easter products this season.
- Tim Webb, partner in supply chain and procurement at KPMG Canada, explained that chocolate production cycles run 12 months ahead, meaning manufacturers retooled equipment and altered recipes months ago.
- "The actual cocoa chocolate that is in a slab... has been reduced," Webb said, as Jo-Ann McArthur, president of Nourish Food Marketing, noted reversing these changes involves significant costs.
- Dirk Van De Put, chief executive of Mondelez International Inc., told investors last month the price decline in cocoa futures "bodes very well" for 2027, expecting higher margins.
- Smaller chocolatiers may leverage spot-buying to produce high-quality products while Amanda Norris, senior economist at Farm Credit Canada, noted manufacturers constantly monitor consumer demand for competitive advantage.
