USCG Selects Kodiak and Seward as Homeports for Arctic Security Cutters
The service is accelerating housing and shore support work as the first cutter is scheduled for delivery in 2028.
- On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced it will homeport its first two Arctic Security Cutters in Kodiak, Alaska, with a third vessel assigned to Seward once infrastructure upgrades are complete.
- The Arctic Security Cutter program, backed by $3.5 billion in Fiscal Year 2025 funding, intends to counter the growing icebreaker capacity of Russia and China while modernizing the U.S. fleet.
- Accelerating preparations to ensure housing and infrastructure are ready, the Coast Guard expects the vessels to support crews of approximately 200 people each when they arrive starting in 2028.
- Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Kevin E. Lunday said these homeports will "strategically position" the icebreakers to "reinforce America's maritime dominance in the Arctic," enabling the agency to defend the northern border.
- The service plans to deliver 11 icebreakers between 2028 and 2035, while continuing to develop a $300 million base in Juneau, which is currently projected for completion in 2029.
