Coast Guard searching for missing 84-year-old boater near York
Crews searched overnight and by helicopter before suspending the active search after evaluating conditions and survivability factors, the Coast Guard said.
Capt. Matt Baker, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England, suspended the search for 84-year-old Chester Benjamin Wiggins on Thursday morning after evaluating search efforts and environmental conditions.
Wiggins departed Cape Neddick Harbor at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a 17-foot Boston Whaler and was last seen aboard the vessel before it was discovered crashed on the shoreline near Freeman Street on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Rescuers deployed an HH-60 helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft from Portsmouth to search the area for the 84-year-old, who stands 5 feet 10 inches and weighs approximately 220 pounds.
Despite the federal suspension, the Maine State Marine Patrol continues searching using drones while the York Police Department urges residents to review local security footage for potential clues.
Anyone with information regarding Wiggins is asked to contact the York Police Department at 207-363-4444 or the Maine State Marine Patrol at 207-624-7076.
