Coast Guard Directs Owner of Sunken Vessel Near Qualicum Beach to Remove Debris
The Coast Guard says the owner must remove the wreckage after about 95 litres of diesel were taken from the vessel.
On Aug. 10, the Canadian Coast Guard issued a formal direction requiring the owner of a 30-foot pleasure craft to remove the sunken boat and debris near Qualicum Beach.
Reported overturned and mostly submerged on June 30, the vessel washed ashore at Qualicum Beach on July 10 and broke apart, prompting the Coast Guard to issue navigational warnings.
Craig Macartney, communications advisor for the Department of National Defence, noted that responders removed approximately 95 litres of diesel fuel, though no hydrocarbon pollution was observed with the debris.
Under Canada's 'polluter pays' principle, owners must cover cleanup and repair costs; the Coast Guard may take action and recover expenses if the owner fails to comply, Macartney told PQB News.
The Coast Guard continues to monitor the owner's efforts to remove vessel debris and restore the site, ensuring compliance with the removal direction.
