Coal Train Derails in Upper Hunter After Runaway Locomotive Reached 90kmh
No injuries were reported after the derailment disrupted rail traffic and sent investigators to preserve the site, officials said.
On Monday, a Pacific National coal train derailed at Ardglen Loop in the NSW Upper Hunter, with the Australian Rail Track Corporation confirming the incident involved the lead wheel coming off the tracks.
This incident follows a July 25 runaway event involving the same operator, where a 10,000-tonne Pacific National train reached 90 kilometres per hour before stopping after rolling about 10 kilometres.
Ardglen Loop, situated on the Liverpool Range between Murrurundi and Werris Creek, has experienced previous derailments, including a 2015 incident involving 19 wagons near Kankool after insufficient braking.
A Pacific National spokesperson confirmed no injuries occurred and the derailment disrupted rail traffic through the area, with the site preserved pending the National Rail Safety Regulator's investigation.
North Sydney Transport Association president Lachlan Steenson called for stronger safety procedures, stating: "Every opportunity to improve safety procedures, especially on non-passenger networks, should be taken seriously.
