New CFP Expansion Plan Would Kill What College Football Does Best
The coaches’ group said a larger bracket would give more programs access to the postseason and reshape the college football calendar.
On Wednesday, the American Football Coaches Association endorsed a 24-team College Football Playoff expansion, a format that would allow teams with 8-4 records to qualify for the bracket.
Coaches favor the larger format to maximize participation and bolster job security, as playoff appearances increasingly serve as a primary success marker for premier programs.
To accommodate this expansion, the association proposed eliminating conference championship games and limiting the schedule to one bye week per season to conclude by the second Monday in January.
A 24-team bracket could include more than one-third of Power Four teams, though critics argue such expansion devalues the regular season, which has historically been college football's most significant component.
Despite the endorsement, the AFCA holds no authority over the playoff's structure; the current 12-team model remains the standard as coaches continue lobbying for broader participation.
