CNN Poll: Political Independents Hit Their Highest Level in a Decade
CNN polling finds independents at 47% of Americans, while Democrats and Republicans split the rest and younger voters moved away from the GOP.
Nearly half of Americans now identify as political independents, reaching 47% according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS from May 7–31, marking the highest level in over a decade.
Democrats and Republicans currently split the remainder at 27% and 26% respectively, with neither party holding a meaningful advantage in CNN benchmarking polls since 2021.
Independents are notably younger than partisans, with 63% under 50, only 67% registered to vote, and nearly half reporting annual household incomes below $50,000.
In this midterm election year, registered voters show Democrats narrowly outnumbering Republicans 31% to 28%, with 41% identifying with neither party, reflecting a shift away from the GOP since 2024.
Many independents still lean toward one party; when leaners are included, 39% align with Democrats and 37% with Republicans, showing the American electorate remains almost evenly divided.
