CM Omar to meet protesting medical interns today over stipend row
Five intern representatives will press for a hike from Rs 12,300 to Rs 30,000 a month as the strike enters its fifth day, sources said.
- On Friday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met representatives of striking MBBS and BDS intern doctors as their protest entered its fifth consecutive day, demanding a stipend increase to Rs 30,000 per month.
- Citing seven years of stagnant pay, medical interns launched an indefinite strike on August 31, with protests across government medical colleges including GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, GMC Anantnag, GMC Kathua, GMC Doda, GMC Rajouri, GMC Udhampur, GMC Baramulla, SKIMS, and SKIMS Medical College Bemina.
- Five representatives—Dr Tasaduk from GMC Srinagar, Dr Akib Javid from GMC Anantnag, Dr Mohammad Shahnawaz Malik and Dr Tanish Mansotra from GMC Jammu, and Dr Faraz from SKIMS—led the delegation, which first met Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani.
- The delegation was scheduled to meet Health Minister Sakina Itoo at the Chief Minister's Rabitq Office on Friday afternoon, with interns hoping discussions will lead to a concrete government decision.
- Protesting doctors warned they will continue the indefinite strike and intensify agitation if demands remain unaddressed, arguing the current Rs 400 daily stipend does not reflect their workload and rising cost of living.
