Amjad Hussain Takes Oath as Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister
Amjad Hussain will take office after a delay tied to Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Iran trip, while PPP leaders discuss cabinet posts and coalition shares.
On Monday, Advocate Amjad Hussain took the oath as Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister at Chinar Bagh, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari attending after returning from Iran where he attended Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral.
The Pakistan Peoples Party secured victory in the 2026 elections and formed a coalition government with the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz to ensure a smooth democratic transition.
Hussain praised youth and women for their role in the election, while highlighting the region's vast natural resources, including around 7,000 glaciers feeding the Indus River and significant untapped hydropower potential.
Under a power-sharing agreement, the new administration is finalizing cabinet appointments, allocating three ministries to the IPP while the PML-N secures the deputy speaker role, governor's post, and opposition leadership slot.
Hussain pledged to end load-shedding within his five-year term and advocated for provisional provincial status to resolve long-standing constitutional uncertainty affecting G-B's economic and governance future.
