Clippers hire John S. Gibson as interim CEO and governor after Steve Ballmer’s NBA ban
- On Monday, the Los Angeles Clippers named Los Angeles-based lawyer John Gibson as interim governor and CEO. Gibson will immediately oversee basketball and business operations and represent the organization on NBA governance matters.
- The NBA announced earlier this month that the Clippers engaged in "a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations" involving salary cap circumvention. The investigation led to owner Steve Ballmer's one-year suspension and a $30 million fine.
- Beyond the suspension, the team forfeited five first-round draft picks while president of business operations Gillian Zucker and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank also received suspensions. Star Kawhi Leonard was fined $700,000 and traded to the Toronto Raptors.
- Gibson, a litigation partner at DLA Piper, is a longtime Clippers season ticket holder tasked with helping run the team. "I am honored to take on this responsibility and grateful for the opportunity to serve," he said in Monday's statement.
- The Clippers face an uphill battle in the Western Conference for the foreseeable future following the loss of key assets. Gibson is tasked with keeping the team competitive as it moves past the league's investigation and sanctions.
