Body of Missing Minnesota Hiker Found in Bighorn Mountains
A coordinated search involving multiple Wyoming agencies ended with the discovery of Grant Gardner's body after nearly four weeks missing in extreme wilderness conditions.
- On the evening of August 26, a group of experienced climbers from North Carolina, who were descending from Cloud Peak in Wyoming’s Cloud Peak Wilderness, came across the body of 38-year-old Grant Gardner.
- Gardner had been missing since August 1 after summiting Cloud Peak during a solo three-day hike planned in July in the Misty Moon Lake area.
- The climbing team saw a reflective shimmer they believed was Gardner’s backpack several hundred feet above their high-altitude camp near a ledge and notified the sheriff's office immediately.
- Sheriff Ken Blackburn acknowledged that although the result was not what they wanted, they trust this will bring comfort and a sense of resolution to Gardner’s family following the challenging recovery effort that returned his remains home.
- The search concluded due to unfavorable survival odds and weather conditions, and the county coroner is now determining the approximate time and cause of Gardner's death.
