In a report released this Tuesday, January 6, researchers lift the veil on the causes of accidental catches of small cetaceans on the Atlantic and West Channel facades. As the scientific co-pilot of the project explains, the marine food chain is disturbed, pushing dolphins to get closer to the coasts and nets of fishermen.
Common dolphins are said to be increasingly in contact with fishing gear, in particular due to disruptions in the marine food chain caused by climate change.
A study by Ifremer and the University of Western Brittany on Tuesday brings new elements on the increase of the bycatch of dolphins in the Gulf of Gascony. The warming of the waters caused a chain reaction, bringing the cetaceans closer to the coast and the fishing nets.
