Clemson Board of Trustees to discuss university president search at next meeting
Trustees will discuss next steps after the university’s president-elect withdrew, forcing a restart of the search with more than 40 days before classes begin.
On Thursday, Clemson University Board of Trustees will meet to resume the presidential search after Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz unexpectedly withdrew from the job earlier this week.
Trustees unanimously selected Guskiewicz in May to become Clemson's 16th president, but he reversed course on July 6, citing personal reasons to remain at Michigan State University.
University leaders must restart the search with just over 40 days before the new school year begins, while Clemson University Provost Robert Jones continues serving as interim president.
Following the vacancy, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint University of Georgia Provost Benjamin Ayers as Clemson's next president, with a five-year contract beginning August 1.
Meanwhile, The South Carolina Freedom Caucus has revived calls for conservative leadership, urging the university to end "woke" policies and select a president aligned with the state's values.
