Clackamas County Sees Level 1 Evacuations as Grasshopper Fire Moves West
The fire has burned 34,659 acres and is 19% contained as crews battle winds and spread toward the Mount Hood Wilderness.
The Grasshopper Fire continues pushing west toward Mount Hood National Forest, triggering new Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuations for the corridor from Rhododendron through Government Camp as the blaze encroaches on Clackamas, Wasco, and Hood River counties.
Ignited by lightning storms on July 23, the blaze spread rapidly due to hot, dry conditions, destroying the century-old Flag Point Lookout in the forest after crews abandoned protection efforts last Friday.
According to InciWeb, the blaze has consumed 34,659 acres and remains 19% contained as of Wednesday morning, with more than 1,300 personnel fighting the fire among 32 wildfires currently burning across Oregon.
Mt. Hood Meadows remains under Level 3 'Go Now' evacuation, while Timberline Lodge operates under Level 1 notice, with owner John Burton reporting that declining air quality has driven visitors away and impacted staffing.
Winds reaching 40 mile an hour complicate firefighting efforts, though crews remain focused on defending structures and strengthening fire lines around Mount Hood as officials urge the public to stay away from the area.
