City to honor Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler with Memphis street renaming

The honor recognizes Lawler’s Memphis wrestling legacy and his ties to the neighborhood where he grew up and attended school.

  • On Thursday, August 20, a section of Homer Street at Given Avenue was honorarily renamed Jerry The King Lawler Street, celebrating the 76-year-old wrestling legend's decades-long connection to Memphis.
  • Lawler grew up nearby on Vernon Avenue and walked to Treadwell High School; The Memphis City Council approved the street naming on June 9th to recognize his local heritage.
  • Held at Treadwell Middle School, the ceremony featured attendees including son Kevin, Jimmy Hart, and legendary announcer Dave Brown, who praised Lawler's journey: "Then he became the king of wrestling."
  • Reflecting on the honor, Lawler shared "so many memories" of the specific street and recalled playing on nearby baseball and football fields during his youth in the neighborhood.
  • Active in the industry, Lawler recently attended WrestleCon in Minneapolis with former WWE broadcast partner Jim Ross; despite past health struggles, he has not ruled out another match.
