FBR Extends Income Tax Returns Filing Deadline to Oct 15
The tax authority said the extension followed requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations after warning of heavier penalties for late filers.
- On Wednesday, the Federal Board of Revenue extended the income tax return filing deadline by 15 days to October 15, 2026, following requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
- Days before the original September 30 deadline, the FBR warned of severe penalties and legal action, urging taxpayers to submit returns with complete supporting documents by the cutoff date.
- Starting October 1, taxpayers who miss filing will be classified as non-filers facing substantially higher penalties: individuals up to Rs25,000 versus Rs1,000 previously, Associations of Persons up to Rs50,000 versus Rs10,000, and companies up to Rs100,000 versus Rs20,000.
- The State Bank of Pakistan directed commercial banks to remain open until 10pm on Wednesday and ensure uninterrupted digital payment access through NIFT clearing, internet banking, and ATMs to facilitate tax payments.
- Nearly 4.88 million income tax returns have been filed this tax year compared to over 3.5 million previously, as the FBR's Tax Asaan app and website remain available with helpline support while the tax authority continuously monitors taxpayer income and assets.
