Reds Lose Another Pitcher as Rhett Lowder Exits Start
The right-hander left after 59 pitches, and manager Terry Francona said the Reds will get an MRI and know more on Friday.
On Thursday, Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Rhett Lowder exited his game against the Chicago Cubs in the fourth inning with right shoulder discomfort after throwing 59 pitches with the Cubs leading 1-0.
Lowder arrived Thursday struggling with a 3-2 record and 5.09 ERA, coming off his worst start of a 14-start career in Pittsburgh five days earlier and having missed all of last season with injuries.
Manager Terry Francona said Lowder "felt some clicking up there" and had "trouble getting into his spot," while Lowder admitted he had been "grinding through some stuff," having allowed a solo home run and three earned runs in three innings.
The Cincinnati Reds fell to the Chicago Cubs for their seventh consecutive loss, dropping to 20-18 overall and 1-9 in the National League Central Division, as reliever Connor Phillips allowed seven runs in the inning after Lowder departed.
With three starting pitchers already on the injured list including ace Hunter Greene and Left-hander Brandon Williamson on the 60-day IL, Nick Lodolo is expected to return Friday to start against the Houston Astros at home.
