Early 3-Run Homer Spoils Kodai Senga's Return to the Mound as Mets Fall to Reds
Sal Stewart’s team-leading 14th homer sparked a four-run first inning as Cincinnati stranded the Mets in a 5-3 loss.
On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 5-3 at Great American Ballpark, fueled by a four-run first inning. Sal Stewart hit a three-run homer and Spencer Steer added a solo shot to secure the victory.
Making his first start since April 26, Kodai Senga allowed four earned runs in the first inning, putting the Mets in an early hole. This marked the second consecutive day New York's starting pitcher was shelled, following Monday's 12-0 loss.
Manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected in the seventh inning after arguing with umpire Carlos Torres. Despite Mark Vientos' sixth-inning two-run homer, the Mets stranded 11 runners and went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Cincinnati reliever Tejay Antone preserved the lead in the eighth, while Mets setup man Luke Weaver extended his scoreless inning streak to 21. New York stranded at least 10 runners for the third straight game.
The series concludes Wednesday at Great American Ballpark, where Mets RHP Nolan McLean faces LHP Nick Lodolo. New York seeks to improve its 3-for-23 performance with runners in scoring position during this series.
