Cigarette may have started fireworks blast that injured firefighters, destroyed homes near Seattle
Investigators found about 700 pounds of fireworks as crews probed the blast that leveled one home and damaged two others.
On Wednesday, a massive fire and explosion leveled a home at 3670 Smugglers Cove Road in Greenbank, injuring three firefighters and damaging two neighboring properties.
Region 3 Arson Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the blast, which involved about 700 pounds of fireworks stored inside the residence.
A large explosion shortly after firefighters arrived threw one into a truck and knocked another to the ground, with debris scattering across the street.
Tanya Hernandez and her family are receiving community support via a GoFundMe and Red Cross assistance after the blast damaged their home and broke windows.
The Greenbank incident echoes a June 17, 2025, explosion on Strawberry Point Road that killed North Whidbey resident Mark Fakkema while dismantling commercial-grade fireworks in his kitchen.
