Artemis II Astronaut Christina Koch Shares Struggle of Adapting to Earth After Moon Mission
Koch said microgravity disrupted her balance as she and three crewmates adjust back to gravity after the lunar mission.
- On Friday, Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch shared a video revealing her struggle to walk after 10 days in space, demonstrating the physical toll of her historic lunar mission near California.
- Microgravity affects the body's vestibular organs, which normally signal the brain about movement. Koch explained, "When people live in microgravity, the systems in our body that have evolved to tell our brains how we're moving, the vestibular organs, don't work correctly."
- Despite each crew member completing 30 minutes of daily resistance training, Koch struggled during a tandem walk with eyes closed. She said, "Luckily we're already adapting back to gravity at 7 days post-splashdown!"
- Data from the mission informs medical research on Earth. Koch noted, "Learning about this can help inform how we treat vertigo, concussions and other neuro-vestibular conditions on Earth."
- The 47-year-old astronaut continues her rehabilitation, joking on Instagram, "Guess I'll be waiting a minute to surf again," while her recovery underscores the rigor of returning from deep space.

After spending a long time in space, returning to Earth is not as simple as putting a foot on the ground. For the astronaut of the Artemis II mission, Christina Koch, the return involves a process of physical readjustment in which her own body has to “relearn” something as basic as staying in balance.Keep reading...

Astronaut Christina Koch, a member of Artemis II’s crew, shared on her Instagram account a video in which she exposes one of the sequels that passes through her body after returning to earth and having experienced microgravity.
Astronaut Christina Koch shared with the American aerospace agency, Nasa, on Friday, 17, a video, where she shows her process of re-adaptation to Earth gravity. The post, made on Instagram, takes place seven days after the return of Artemis II's crew to Earth. Christina told us that microgravity permanence interferes with the systems responsible for spatial orientation. The vestibular organs do not function properly in space," she explained. "An…
