Chris Alexander Drops Out of Toronto Mayoral Race

Alexander said he would not endorse another candidate after polling at 7.2%, leaving 52 people in the mayoral race, according to campaign and survey reports.

  • On Tuesday, former federal Conservative cabinet minister Chris Alexander withdrew from the Toronto mayoral race as advance voting commenced. His name will remain on the ballot, as the announcement came after the official withdrawal deadline.
  • Registering in July to give Toronto its "sense of direction back," Alexander consistently trailed in public polling. Liaison Strategies showed his campaign in a distant third with only nine per cent support compared to his rivals.
  • A Nanos Research survey released Tuesday showed Alexander at four per cent among decided voters, trailing Olivia Chow at 52.4 per cent and Councillor Brad Bradford at 42.6 per cent. Alexander said, "I just don't see us catching up, I don't see that path."
  • Alexander's withdrawal transforms the race into a two-horse contest between Chow and Bradford with just under three weeks until the Oct. 26 election. He confirmed he will not endorse any remaining candidate.
  • Now that his campaign has ended, Alexander plans to return to the private sector advising companies and sitting on boards. He noted "there's a lot of work to do" in that sector.
