CHP Launches 78-Hour Maximum Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend
Officers will target impaired drivers and pair the effort with safety education after CHP logged more than 1,200 DUI arrests last Labor Day weekend.
- The California Highway Patrol's 78-hour Labor Day enforcement period began Friday at 6:01 p.m., with officers focusing on removing impaired drivers from roads through Monday, Sept. 7, at 11:59 p.m.
- Coinciding with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized, "There is no excuse for driving impaired."
- During the 2025 Labor Day weekend, the CHP made more than 1,200 impaired driving arrests, while nearly 500 DUI-related crashes caused more than 270 injuries and eight deaths.
- The San Andreas CHP is conducting a sobriety checkpoint tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 5, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Murphys Area, following similar actions by Sacramento and Folsom police on Friday.
- Officials urge motorists planning to drink to designate a sober driver or use rideshare services, especially as California gas prices climbed to $5.80 per gallon this holiday weekend.
