Sudan: Cholera Spreads in North Darfur, 640,000 Children Under Threat, Unicef Warns
DARFUR, SUDAN, AUG 3 – The outbreak is worsened by conflict, poor sanitation, and displacement, with UNICEF reporting over 640,000 children at risk and urgent funding needs of $30.6 million.
- UNICEF warned in August 2024 that a cholera outbreak is spreading rapidly in North Darfur, Sudan, with over 94,000 cases and 2,370 deaths nationwide.
- The outbreak occurs amid intense fighting that began in April 2023 between Sudan’s military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, a clash that has destroyed infrastructure and forced millions to flee their homes.
- Tawila, a town located about 70 kilometers away from El Fasher, the state capital currently under siege, has reported over 1,180 cholera cases and at least 20 deaths amid numerous bombed hospitals and the closure of many health clinics.
- Sheldon Yett, UNICEF’s Representative in Sudan, highlighted that cholera, although avoidable and manageable with proper treatment, continues to spread rapidly in Tawila and other parts of Darfur, putting children's health at serious risk, particularly among the most vulnerable and youngest groups.
- UNICEF urgently requires $30.6 million to scale up emergency response including vaccines, treatment centers, and clean water to protect more than 640,000 malnourished, at-risk children under five in the region.
