Asda Relaunches Nostalgic Chocolate Bar 30 Years After High Court Battle
The relaunch taps nostalgia as Asda says 84% of shoppers are more open to own-brand snack swaps than five years ago.
On Monday, August 17, Asda officially relaunched Puffin bars nationwide, priced at £1 for 8 bars. The biscuits return after nearly 30 years absent from shelves.
In 1997, McVitie's sued Asda in the High Court, claiming Puffin bars were confusingly similar to its Penguin brand. Though the judge allowed the Puffin name, Asda was forced to redesign packaging before eventually discontinuing the product.
According to Asda research, 84% of Brits are more open to trying own-brand snacks than five years ago, with 88% saying finding an equivalent that tastes as good feels like 'a proper big win.'
Social media users celebrated the return, with one saying 'Happy they are back,' though others criticized the 'chocolate-flavoured' label. One individual noted: 'It's not real chocolate so I won't be buying.'
This relaunch joins a wider retailer trend reviving discontinued products. M&S recently returned four 'iconic' retro chocolate bars, and Asda posted on social media: 'Long before Caterpillar Gate, there was Bird Gate.
