Chips washing up on Eastbourne beach sparks action from locals

Storms caused at least 20 shipping containers to spill food and packaging, including 1.9 tonnes of debris collected by volunteers along East Sussex beaches.

  • On Saturday, January 17, Eastbourne resident Joel Bonnici and his partner Trisha found tens of thousands of uncooked potato chips forming a blanket up to two feet deep at Falling Sands near Beachy Head.
  • Containers are thought to have fallen from two separate vessels off the Isle of Wight during Storm Goretti, with at least 20 containers overboard causing chips to wash up on East Sussex shores.
  • Volunteers and council crews have removed plastic wrapping and collected 1.9 tonnes of waste, nearly 4 times more than usual, while Neighbourhood First officers and street sweeping staff focus on clearing the beach.
  • Bonnici warned the bags threaten wildlife, noting the seal colony of 20 to 30 seals and said `Removing the plastic bags is a priority` as volunteers collect debris, while East Sussex County Council advised local beach visitors and dog owners to keep dogs on leads.
  • Cleanup operations are continuing between Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, while Brand Marine said it is providing recovery on behalf of the Lombok Strait owner after losing 17 refrigerated containers on January 8.
