Chinook Crash Families Urge New PM to Back Fresh Review Into 1994 Tragedy
The Chinook Justice Campaign says 55 family members want a review independent of the Ministry of Defence and a meeting with Burnham within 100 days.
- Families of victims from the 1994 RAF Chinook helicopter crash are urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to establish a fresh, independent review and meet within his first 100 days to present evidence regarding the Chinook Mk2's airworthiness.
- Twenty-Nine personnel died when the Chinook HC-2 crashed on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1994; the 2011 inquiry failed to determine the cause, and a High Court judge recently dismissed a legal challenge from families, citing the claim was filed too late.
- The Chinook Justice Campaign , representing more than 55 family members, seeks to use this case as a test for the new Hillsborough Law, backed by former Conservative defence secretary Sir Liam Fox, who personally urged Burnham to resolve the matter.
- Matt Tobias, son of Lieutenant Colonel John Tobias, stated the families "do not want years of further litigation," noting Burnham "has the power to prevent that" by ordering an independent investigation rather than pursuing an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
- Campaigners also wrote to Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, urging him to "begin correcting the mistakes of your predecessors," suggesting the case offers the Government a prime opportunity to demonstrate commitment to transparency and the recently backed duty of candour.
