Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt's 100m world record in test run

The robot reached a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second in a preparatory test as organizers highlighted rapid advances in Chinese robotics.

  • On Saturday, Honor's humanoid robot Lightning ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds during a preparatory test for the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record.
  • Researchers lengthened Lightning's legs by 10 cm to 1.05 meters ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games to optimize stride, China Central Television reported.
  • In April, Lightning won the 21-kilometer Beijing half marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, outpacing elite human runners, while reaching a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second.
  • With over 2,000 robots from 16 countries competing at the National Speed Skating Oval, China is championing humanoid robotics as a strategic emerging industry.
  • Although these robots are evolving rapidly, experts note they remain largely used for research and demonstrations, as mass real-world deployment in manufacturing and logistics remains the industry's primary challenge.
