On January 6, the repression of the authorities took place against the leaders of the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, an "underground" evangelical community founded by Pastor Wang Yi, already in prison since 2018. In October it had been the turn of Zion Church.

On January 6, the Chengdu Autumn Rain Covenant Church in Sichuan Province was suppressed by police in Chengdu and Deyang. Multiple sources told reporters that the Deyang Public Security Bureau was leading the investigation, and the case was classified as "inciting subversion of state power."
