Chinese chipmaker SMIC increases prices on strong AI demand

SMIC said negotiations with customers led to higher wafer prices, while second-quarter revenue topped $3 billion and profit tripled on strong AI demand.

  • On Friday, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp announced it raised prices for its most sought-after capacity as AI-related demand continues to underpin production orders.
  • Strong AI-related demand drove SMIC revenue above $3 billion for the first time in the second quarter, beating analyst estimates and tightening global semiconductor supply chains.
  • Profit attributable to shareholders tripled to $479.2 million while SMIC shipped 2.9 million 8-inch-equivalent wafers, a 14% increase from the previous quarter.
  • Co-CEO Zhao Haijun said SMIC is negotiating with customers for fairer pricing, noting, "We believe we've reached top-tier industry standards in these areas."
  • SMIC expects third-quarter revenue to rise 2% to 4% from the second quarter, with the company planning to adjust capacity and accelerate new production lines to ease supply constraints.
