Chinese automakers gain ground in contracting European market, data shows

BELGIUM, JUL 24 – Chinese brands nearly doubled their 5.1% market share in Europe in H1 2025, driven by a 91% sales increase amid falling gasoline and diesel vehicle registrations, ACEA data showed.

  • In the first half of 2025, Chinese car brands saw sales jump 91% to 347,135 units, increasing their market share to a record 5.1%, Jato Dynamics report.
  • Amid a contracting market, new car sales fell over 5%, registrations dropped 5.1% to 1.2 million vehicles, ACEA said on Thursday.
  • Nearly 60% of cars were electrified, and hybrid-electric cars captured 34.8% of EU registrations, showing strong electrification growth.
  • Despite EV growth, Tesla lost market share for a sixth month, and the four best-selling groups in Europe sold fewer cars than in June 2024.
  • Automakers urged Brussels, and the European Commission granted a three-year window to meet stricter emissions targets.
