Why a Newly Formed Lake Is Sparking Fears of More Flooding Along the Nepal-China Border
Authorities said the lake holds a few million cubic meters of water and could burst, while rescuers work in flood-hit border areas.
- Authorities in Nepal warned on Friday that a newly formed lake created by a recent glacial collapse near the China border could burst and trigger further flooding in already devastated regions.
- Following the August 26 ice-rock avalanche, floodwaters buried communities under thick mud, prompting climate scientists to report that high temperatures are driving glacial melts accumulating debris along river paths.
- Located more than 10 kilometers from Gyirong Port, the lake sits at an elevation of 2,950 meters, about 1,000 meters above the crossing. The water volume equals around 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- The death toll in Nepal has risen to 781, with more than 2,500 people missing, including 592 foreign nationals, as rescuers continue operations. China reported 16 deaths and 546 missing in Tibet, while authorities remain on high alert.
- Experts caution that while alerts must be taken seriously, a flash flood as devastating as the one on Wednesday is unlikely to repeat. However, ongoing glacial melting from high temperatures keeps the region in precarious uncertainty.
