China's Xi meets North Korea's premier ahead of treaty anniversary
Pak’s visit comes after Xi and Kim agreed to expand cooperation across politics, economy and culture last month, state media said.
- Chinese President Jinping met Premier Pak Thae Song in Beijing on Friday during a three-day visit marking the 65th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.
- Signed on July 11, 1961, the Treaty remains China's only active mutual defense pact, providing the foundational legal framework for security between Beijing and Pyongyang.
- Letters exchanged between Chinese President Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong, published by the Korean Central News Agency on Saturday, described bilateral ties as having risen to a "new strategic level."
- Ties between Beijing and Pyongyang have warmed markedly since late 2025, with resumption of passenger train services and direct flights suggesting a sustained effort to reintegrate North Korea into China's regional orbit.
- Jinping travelled to Pyongyang last month for his first visit in seven years, and Premier Pak Thae Song, a longstanding member of Kim's inner circle, now manages critical diplomatic and industrial portfolios.
