China's Bold Space Endeavors: Tianwen-2 and Methane-Powered Rocket Launch

  • China will launch the Tianwen-2 mission at the end of May 2025 from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre to sample asteroid Kamoʻoalewa.
  • The mission follows China's lunar sample returns and aims to join the US, Russia, and Japan in interplanetary asteroid exploration efforts.
  • Tianwen-2 will use up to three sampling methods, including touch-and-go, scraping with a robotic arm, and anchored drilling, over about two-and-a-half years.
  • The spacecraft plans to gather a sample mass ranging from a couple of hundred grams up to one kilogram, return these materials to Earth by the end of 2027, and subsequently proceed to orbit comet 311P/PANSTARRS located within the asteroid belt.
  • If successful, Tianwen-2 will mark China’s first sampling of an interplanetary body and advance its planetary exploration and planetary defense capabilities.
