China's actions risk creation of new status quo, Taiwan official says
Taiwanese officials say China’s coast guard patrols and ship checks could normalize a new maritime boundary and raise risks for commercial shipping.
- On Wednesday, National Security Council deputy secretary-general Lii Wen warned that China's "authoritarian expansionism" will persist without global action, describing Beijing's strategy as "incremental salami slicing."
- Lii told an international forum that China is "constantly pushing the limits" to "transform international waterways into internal waters" using military, coast guard, and maritime militia vessels.
- Ocean Affairs Minister Kuan Bi-ling told the forum that Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines face the "same pattern of actions" deliberately controlled to remain below conventional warfare thresholds.
- Rejecting the patrol, Ocean Affairs Deputy Minister Sung Chen-en noted the waters are "within our exclusive economic zone," while US Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth urged continued international transits.
- As Chinese ships regularly ply the East China Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea, Kuan said international partners need a "shared understanding of the status quo" before the next crisis.
