China sentences 3 people to death for running brutal scam centers in Myanmar
On Tuesday, the Quanzhou Intermediate People's Court sentenced Wei Huairen, Chen Dawei, and Liao Jingfang to death for their involvement in the "Wei family criminal gang" operating brutal scam centers in Myanmar's Kokang region.
State broadcaster CCTV described the group as the "most violent criminal force in northern Myanmar," having created an "iron triangle of political, military, and business criminal activities" through 14 large-scale scam compounds that netted more than $1.8 billion.
Luring "large numbers" of Chinese nationals through fake promises of high wages, the gang left victims bound with iron chains and bullet holes in their skulls, crimes including murder, drug trafficking, and prostitution.
Beyond the death sentences, three other gang members received life sentences, while 55 others were given prison terms ranging from 24 years to three years and three months, the court said.
China has stepped up cooperation with Southeast Asian nations to crack down on these networks, following earlier executions of members from the "Ming family criminal gang" in January and the Bai clan the following month.
