China poses 'highly sophisticated' cyber threat to UK, NCSC warns
The UK Government cited outdated laws and political reluctance as factors in the espionage case collapse while the National Cyber Security Centre reported a 50% rise in severe cyberattacks.
- Last month, Security minister Dan Jarvis acknowledged the Government accepts China poses a series of threats to UK national security after charges against Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry were dropped.
- The Crown Prosecution Service said the case was dropped because the Government failed to provide evidence China was a threat, while Jarvis blamed the previous Conservative administration's reluctance and outdated laws.
- Reporting from the NCSC found a 50% rise in 'highly significant' incidents to 18 over the past year, supporting 429 cases with 204 deemed nationally significant, up from 89.
- Jaguar Land Rover paused production after a hack, causing supply-chain disruption, and the UK government agreed a £1.5bn loan to address the attack's fallout.
- The NCSC and allies disclosed in September 2024 a Flax Typhoon botnet of 260,000 compromised devices and warned hackers linked to Beijing use AI to boost attacks.
