China pledges deeper cooperation with Mozambique

The two leaders signed more than 20 cooperation documents and China said it will fully implement zero-tariff measures for 53 African countries starting May 1.

  • On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo met in Beijing, agreeing to upgrade bilateral ties to a China-Mozambique community with a shared future in the new era.
  • Since establishing diplomatic relations, China and Mozambique have maintained mutual trust, setting a fine example of South-South cooperation as Xi noted this partnership reflects shared desires to strengthen solidarity amid volatile global challenges.
  • Starting May 1, China will grant 53 African countries, including Mozambique, zero-tariff treatment on 100 percent of goods, while Xi and Chapo witnessed the signing of more than 20 cooperation documents covering trade, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges.
  • Chapo proposed shifting Sino-Mozambican relations toward economic development, inviting Chinese companies to build toll roads using a Build-Operate-Transfer model with projects operating up to 30 years to recover costs through tolls.
  • Seeking economic independence, Chapo said, "Now we want to open a new page in economic and commercial cooperation," as China currently accounts for 1.5 per cent of Foreign Direct Investment in Mozambique, ranking sixth among investors.
