China Set To Launch Arctic ‘Ice Silk Road’ To Bypass Increasingly Vulnerable Maritime Chokepoints

The route cuts sailing time from about 40 days to 20 and avoids Red Sea chokepoints as Sea Legend expands Arctic shipping.

  • Chinese shipping company Sea Legend is launching the China-Europe Arctic Express this week, a weekly container service connecting Ningbo, China, with Felixstowe, United Kingdom, via Russia's Northern Sea Route, which Sea Legend calls the "Ice Silk Road."
  • To avoid security threats in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and Red Sea, the Arctic route offers a strategic alternative, reducing travel time between Ningbo and Felixstowe from about 40 days to roughly 20 days.
  • The Liberia-registered Dubai Tower, with a deadweight of 23,338 tonnes and 1,740 TEUs capacity, initiates the service. Russia's state-controlled Rosatom issued permits for the 2026 season for Sea Legend's seven licensed vessels.
  • Increased Arctic shipping faces scrutiny from environmental groups concerned about heavy fuel oil use and limited rescue facilities. Allianz analysis identified more than 500 reported shipping incidents in the Arctic Circle over the past 10 years.
  • South Korea is preparing its first demonstration voyage through the Northern Sea Route later this month. PanStar plans to collect data during its 2026 voyage before considering regular service in the coming years.
