China, Indonesia agree to boost military ties, work closer on minerals, energy and tech

The talks are set to address defence cooperation, trade frictions and South China Sea tensions as China remains a major investor in Indonesia.

  • On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Jakarta for the inaugural China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, meeting Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono to discuss economic, maritime, and security cooperation.
  • This inaugural dialogue advances the five-pillar partnership established in 2023, covering political, economic, maritime, people-to-people, and security cooperation, as Indonesia maintains its "free and active" foreign policy between Beijing and Washington.
  • China remains a major investor, contributing $3.9 billion in foreign direct investment during 2026's first half, though the China Chamber of Commerce alleged Chinese firms face "excessively stringent regulation, over-enforcement."
  • Wang will later join Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun for "2+2" talks with Indonesian defence counterparts, aiming to "increase strategic communication, to deepen strategic coordination" as representatives of the Global South.
  • International relations researcher Pieter Pandie of the CSIS think tank told AFP that Jakarta still leans "much more" toward Washington, cautioning against interpreting Friday's meeting as signalling a "realignment" toward Beijing.
