China expels two top generals from party and military, alleging disloyalty, corruption
- On Monday, China expelled top military officers Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from the Communist Party and military for "serious violations of discipline and law," the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
- The move follows a broader anti-corruption crackdown ordered by Chinese President Jinping in 2012; Zhang, the Central Military Commission vice chairman and a Politburo member, was long considered his closest military ally.
- Xinhua cited official documents stating the pair "formed cliques and factions" and "used their positions to help others in matters such as job promotion," with cases involving "exceptionally large sums of money."
- Authorities transferred the cases to military legal organs "for review and prosecution," while the expulsion awaits ratification by the Central Committee, Xinhua said.
- This announcement arrives days before Chinese President Jinping travels to meet President Donald Trump and weeks before a key party conclave on internal governance and discipline.
