China Eastern Airlines to Buy 25 Airbus A330neo Jets for US$9.4 Billion
The transaction is priced at about $9.35 billion, and China Eastern said the new jets will help expand its long-haul network.
On Friday, China Eastern Airlines signed an agreement to purchase 25 Airbus A330neo jets for a catalogue price of about $9.35 billion, with deliveries scheduled in batches from 2029 to 2033.
The Shanghai-based carrier plans to deploy these widebody jets primarily from Shanghai Pudong Airport to expand intercontinental destinations and increase flight frequencies on long-haul routes.
This deal follows a March agreement where China Eastern purchased 101 A320neo aircraft for about $15.8 billion, while the airline expects to retire at least 10 older A330 jets during the delivery period.
Financing for the acquisition involves bank loans, the carrier's own capital, and bond issuances; an offshore unit will issue overseas bonds worth up to 2.8 billion yuan .
Airbus continues to expand its share in the world's second-largest aviation market, where the European planemaker expects passenger traffic to grow by around 5 per cent annually over the next two decades.
