China could see widespread use of brain-computer tech in 3-5 years, expert says
China plans over 10 active trials and aims to enroll 50+ patients this year while integrating BCI treatments into insurance, targeting a $809 million market by 2027.
- On March 7, Yao Dezhong, Director of the Sichuan Institute of Brain Science, said China could see brain-computer technology in practical public use within three to five years.
- A national BCI development strategy released last year aims for breakthroughs by 2027 and to cultivate two or three world-class firms by 2030, while Beijing's five-year plan elevated BCIs to a core strategic industry.
- Scientists say more than 10 trials are active, with plans to enrol over 50 patients this year, recent trials aiding paralysed patients and amputees, and CCID Consulting projects a 5.58 billion yuan market by 2027.
- Yao cautioned that new policies will not change things overnight despite China’s many advantages in BCIs and Chinese hospitals establishing research labs to speed clinical trials.
- Yao said Neuralink's surgical robot is a 'technical advantage, which I think is remarkable,' while Chinese teams pursue multiple brain-computer interface modalities for clinical use, emphasizing domestic progress.

Brain chips are considered an increasingly viable solution, as they allow these tetraplegic people to recover part of their lives, at least at the level of hobbies and activities they can do. After seeing how Neuralink allowed disabled people to do things like controlling their PC, China has set up a plan to ensure that brain-computer technology (BCI) has much more widespread public use in a matter of just a few years, thus surpassing Neuralink …
