Can Europe Break Free From China’s Rare-Earth Grip?
CHINA, JUL 23 – China dominates over 80% of critical battery materials for U.S. defense, controlling supply from mining to assembly and using export controls to exert geopolitical influence, report says.
- On Monday, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies report revealed China was found to control over 80% of critical materials used in batteries essential for United States defense technologies, posing an urgent national security threat.
- Through the Belt and Road Initiative, China leveraged influence to secure critical mineral deposits, investing $57 billion since two decades ago across Africa, Latin America, and beyond.
- The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies report claimed China seized control of upstream mining, midstream component production and downstream battery assembly, and said it weaponized these supply chains by restricting graphite exports and threatening bans on battery technology.
- U.S. forces face vulnerabilities as defense experts warn of weaponized supply chain risks, given Chinese control over critical battery materials used in high-tech weapon systems.
- In response, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies concluded U.S. investments in mineral extraction and processing with greater transparency standards are key to countering Beijing’s battery dominance.
