- On Tuesday , Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing's hard line on Taiwan and US arms sales at an annual symposium in Beijing, as China launched live-firing drills encircling Taiwan this week.
- The war games began 11 days after the United States announced a record $11.1 billion arms package to Taiwan, and Beijing described the exercises as a response to `external interference` and provocations by Taiwan independence forces.
- Beijing combined the drills with stepped-up diplomacy among neighbours, as Wang met Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Foreign Minister, and Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thai Foreign Minister, in Yunnan province, China on Dec 29, producing a joint communique to rebuild trust.
- Casting China as a stabilising force, Wang Yi said this year China worked to steady relations among major powers, deepen ties with neighbours and the Global South and take on greater responsibility for global peace and development.
- Wang Yi said achieving reunification and safeguarding territorial integrity were obligations Beijing `must fulfil`, marking the `80th anniversary of Taiwan's return to the motherland` while opposing geopolitical rivalry.
