China bans 73 persons from soccer for life in latest anti-corruption controversy
Seventy-three football personnel received lifetime bans and 13 clubs face point deductions and fines to uphold discipline amid match-fixing and bribery scandals, the Chinese Football Association said.
- The CFA announced on Thursday lifetime bans for 73 industry personnel, including Li Tie and Chen Xuyuan, following confirmation of offences by effective judicial judgments.
- The CFA said the move followed a "systematic review" and judicial findings, aiming "to enforce industry discipline, purify the football environment, and maintain fair competition" under President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign.
- Tianjin Jinmen Tiger Football Club and Shanghai Shenhua were hit hardest, with 10-point deductions and one million yuan fines each, while Shanghai Port and Beijing Guoan face five-point, 400,000-yuan penalties.
- When the 2026 CSL season starts in March, nine teams will start with negative points and 11 of 16 2025 CSL clubs will be penalized amid financial strain after Guangzhou FC folded in 2025.
- The move adds to a long-running purge that now totals 116 lifetime bans over 17 months, including Chen Xuyuan, serving life term for $11 million in bribes, and Li Tie, serving 20-year prison sentence.
