16-Year-Old New Jersey Teen Dies After Drowning in Lake Michigan
Authorities say 15-year-old Taha Badar went underwater in strong rip currents before firefighters pulled him from Lake Michigan and he died at a hospital.
On Monday, 15-year-old Taha Badar of East Brunswick, New Jersey, died after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Michigan City. The LaPorte County Coroner identified the victim following the rescue attempt near Lake Shore Drive and Shawmut Drive.
The LaPorte County Communications Center received a 911 call at 1:50 p.m. Monday reporting a juvenile struggling in the water. Washington Park Lifeguards had posted a red flag due to large waves and strong rip currents at the time.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., a Michigan City Firefighter located the victim 100 yards west of where he was last seen and pulled him from the water. First responders began lifesaving measures before transporting him to Franciscan Health Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Multiple agencies including the Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department, and United States Coast Guard responded to the scene. Indiana Conservation Officers and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are leading the investigation into the drowning.
Following the incident, the Michigan City Fire Department urged visitors to remain mindful of beach hazard statements, warning flags, and changing water conditions. Public safety depends on adherence to these warnings during visits to Lake Michigan.
